FC Calne Vets strike again in Beversbrook six a side

There was a top of the table clash on Tuesday in the Calne six a side from Beversbrook Sports Facility as The Rushes took on Fitness Box. Behind them though the league table is hotting up as three other teams sit just one win behind. What’s clear then, is that this season the league promises to be closer and more competitive than ever before. There is no clear favourites for the title, anyone of those five has a realistic chance of claiming the Leisure Leagues title.

The night started with the two favourites for the title The Rushes and Fitness Box going head to head in a key title showdown. The Rushes have been on fire this season winning their first four games. However, this game represented by far their toughest test so far. It started badly for them as well when Dan Jeary gave away a penalty in the opening minutes. Fitness’s attacker did him for pace down the left hand side and he dived in catching the trailing leg and bringing him down. The penalty was calmly dispatched leaving The Rushes with a mountain to climb to get back into the game. They threw everything including the kitchen sink as they tried to recover lost ground. They got two goals in the process but left them selves exposed at the back allowed the Rushes to add four more goals on the counter attack. Despite the defeat The a Rushes stay top of the league but only just. There are now only a point ahead of the chasing pack which includes TMT and Fitness Box.

In the other early kick off Dads continues their good run of form with a great result against Netsix and Chill. After a slow start to the season where they lost three on the bounce this game shows that they are beginning to return to their best form. They won this game 2-0 in what was a competitive game against Netsix and Chill. Netsix made a fast start but unfortunately they couldn’t brake Dads down. Dads made some changes at the start of the second half which had an immediate impact. They began to put passages of play together and create openings. They scored their first after some great work down the right hand side while the second came following a period sustained pressure. They still have a long way to go to catch the teams above them but if they can keep up this current form they have every chance.

The late kick offs got underway with the giant killers of the league FC Calne Veterans taking on TMT. After already dispatching Fitness Box earlier in the season no one was expecting them to repeat the feat against TMT. However that’s exactly what happened as they beat them 1-0 in an incredibly tight game. Both teams played well and had good chances but it was a fine performance from Calne’s goal keeper which kept TMT at bay. Calne on the other hand scored with what was there only clear cut chance of the game. The result was a huge disappointment from TMT who had hoped to capitalise on The Rushes losing to retake the lead in the title race. Instead they remain one point behind while FC Calne Veterans have joined the title race with the win. Now they are just one win behind The Rushes and have a great chance of winning the title in their first season in the league.

The other late kick off was full of action. RichTeaWellens have been in the form of their lives and are currently the form team in the league. They relegated Holo FC to yet another defeat with an excellent 4-0 win. Both teams attempted to get the ball down and play but it was RichTea that I’m reality controlled the game. They used their superior strength and experience to dominate the football. They played through the lines with confidence and crucially for them did not overplay in the final third. Instead they were clinical with their finishing. Without the ball they were well organised and stifled every attempt Holo had. RichTeaWellens with these three wins are the final team to join the title race. They may well have more difficult games to come but they are riding the crest of a wave at the moment and with the confidence of recent wins inspiring them they have every chance of putting in a strong second half of the season.
