Round 9 and the penultimate fixtures of the current season were completed last night and there were plenty of surprise results on offer.
Maradona Kebab, needing just a point to secure the league title, went up against third place Murder on Zidane's Floor expecting to get the job done but fumbled their lines. Less than 2 minutes were on the clock when Murder on Zidane's Floor were awarded a penalty which was dispatched by Callum before Jake doubled the lead. Goals either side of half time for Finchy and Ollie brought the scores level and Maradona Kebab just had to see the game out to clinch a maiden league title but with 3 minutes remaining Jake grabbed his second of the game to take the three horse title race into the final week.
Beverley La Coruna ground out a distinctive 1-0 victory over Viking Rangers to ensure they go into the last game with a chance of defending their title, albeit a small one. Destiny is in their own hands as they face league leaders Maradona Kebab, but with them sitting two points and a goal difference deficit of 10 behind with an inferior GS column, it will take a win by 6 clear goals to haul themselves back into top spot. With Murder on Zidane's Floor still harboring an outside hope, Maradona Kebab will be looking to secure at least the point they need to wrap up the league. The aforementioned outside challengers Murder on Zidane's Floor sit two points and -11 GD behind the leaders so their aim will be to win, rack up the goals and hope Beverley La Coruna do them a favour.
At the other end of the league, The Academy threw the relegation battle wide open by grabbing a vital 1-0 win over Little Boys Clubs, leapfrogging their opponents to move out of the relegation zone in the progress. Little Boys Clubs will now need to get a result against title chasing Murder on Zidane's Floor whilst The Academy face Viking Rangers who have given a good account of themselves in their opening two games since joining the league; they could yet play a crucial role in deciding who joins them in Division 1 next season.
In Division 1, FC Club de Futbol AFC secured promotion courtesy of a walkover victory against the departing SD7 FC, but the chasing teams both stumbled as Inter Peroni were on the wrong end of a 4-0 beating from Sal's U12's and Expected Toulouse could only draw 1-1 with Crystal Phallus, although that could end up being a crucial point as they now hold a 1 point lead over Peroni in the promotion race. Next week in the final games Inter Peroni face FC Club de Futbol AFC who will be looking to wrap up the league title, whereas Expected Toulouse's destiny is somewhat unclear, will SD7 FC turn up for a farewell game, or will Expected Toulouse's promotion hopes rest on a game against a unknown entity? A new team is currently waiting in the wings for a spot to open up and this could be their first game!
