The new season got underway in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side from Gerard Buxton Sports Ground with old teams and new doing battle to ensure they start the season the right way. All teams showed good footballing skills and gave an indication that the season promises to but closer and more competitive than ever.
Game 1 saw reigning champions Bailey’s Boys taking on new comers to the league Norfolk ‘N’Chance. After dominating last season Bailey’s might be forgiven for thinking that they would win this game comfortably. However, captain of Norfolk was quietly confident of giving the boys in blue a good game with him saying in his pre match press conference “we are up for this, a couple of our lads have played a good standard.” True to his word Norfolk played some great football and were unlucky not to get something from the game. In the final third Baileys were just too strong and their finishing was clinical as they carried on this season how they finished the last, with a win.
Who Ate All Depays finished last season stronger than anyone and know that a strong start to this season is necessary to keep pace with Bailey’s. They face tricky opposition in the form of 2 Goals 1 Cup. Depending on who turns up for them they can either be super competitive or lacklustre. On Monday they were up for it and showed Depays a clean pair of heels on more than one occasion. However. Last seasons MVP Jason was more than up for the challenge as he pulled off a string of world class saves to deny 2 Goals and goal that their good play deserved. At the other end Pete Martin (the only sober man on the pitch) provided the attacking threat. His first goal was reminiscent of Maradona against England as he dribbled the length of the pitch going past player after player before calmly slotting home. His second was a more fortuitous deflection off of his chest (Jason said Man Boobs). If it hadn’t been for 2 Goals keeper it could have been much more but Depays will settle for the 2-0 win in a tricky opening game.
In the third game the other new team Alexandre LacOfKet took on The Unplayable’s in a clash of youthful exuberance V guile and experience. In first half the teams were evenly matched but as the game dragged on Alexandre started to get more time and space on the ball. Unplayable’s captain Justin was left ruing missed chances but nonetheless acknowledged that their opponents were a quality outfit and the better team on the day.
The final game of the night saw Athletic Bilbao Baggins take on The Underdogs. Last season Athletic sprinted out the blocks and stole a march on the rest of the field and there is every indication that the same thing could be about to happen this time around too. They absolutely smashed The Underdogs 7-0. Sam Rickets, determined to prove himself after missing out on the MVP prize, was the main man once again with a hatful of Goals to start off his campaign with a bang”
