Bailey's Boys seal crucial win at Gerard Buxton six a side

The Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side produced another fantastic display of football the other night. Players commented after that there was a cracking atmosphere and all the games were entertaining and played in the right spirit.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the game between Gangsters Allardyce and Bailey's Boys. Many had tipped Gangsters to record an upset here but Bailey's were just too good on the night and in the end they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. The defeat leaves Gangsters 10 points adrift at the top of the table and unlikely to be able to hold onto their crown from the previous season. However, this game was a potential banana skin for Bailey's and coming through it with a win gives them a great chance of overhauling Exeter when the two meet in a few weeks time.

In the other early kick off Athletic recorded a solid 4-2 win against the Plough. This was a great victory given that the Plough, while they sit near the bottom of the table, have been making great strides of late to get back on terms with the teams above them since joining the league a few months ago. Both teams possess great footballers but Athletic edged this one because of the fantastic work rate of their midfield. The Gerard Buxton is probably one of the biggest pitches in Swindon and this means teams have to be fit enough to get up and down the pitch for the full 30 minutes. The Plough though will be satisfied with their nights work and happy in the knowledge that they are not far away from a fantastic result

One of the stand out performances of the night was FC Guava recording a 2-1 victory against Bass Rugby. The result puts clear daylight between them and Sloblins at the bottom of the table. The victory was hard won and relied on a solid foundation at the back. Bass Rugby attacked hard and were relentlessly applying pressure for much of the game. They just could not find the breakthrough that would have seen FC Guava stumble. As the game went on Guava came into the game more and more passing the ball around nicely to create gaps in Bass's normally tight defence.

On the other pitch is was a quite night for Who Ate All Depays keeper Jason Hillier as his team smashed Sloblins 8-0. The goals were well worked but Sloblins simply gave the boys in orange far too much time and space in front of their own goal line. The end result was that striker Craig Maddock had a field day in front of goal. Sloblins will know that they are capable of playing much better. However, they will also know that this was a game that in reality they were always going to struggle to win. They will look to other games later in the season to pick up some much needed points.

In the late game Exeter managed to put 5 past 2 Goals 1 Cup to ensure that  they stayed marginally ahead of Baileys. Captain Pete Leppan said after the game that they were delighted to get the win. "They are tough opposition so we are just happy to come through it and get plenty of goals". The goals could be what decides this championship, as close as it is and at the moment Bailey's have the advantage in that regard.

In the other late game a really exciting game was played out between the Underdogs and the Unplayables. Both teams have been inconsistent at times this season so it was always going to be interesting to see which team turned up. It turned out to be The Underdogs who did the best job on the night as captain of the Unplayables Justin admitted that his side just didn't do enough to win.

This concludes another night in quite simply the best six a side league in Swindon. If you don't believe me, ask the players who turn up every week to play.
