Baileys seal Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett title

It was once again another outstanding night of footballing action in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side from the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. There was goals. The night had drama and controversy in abundance as there was a late shift in the table which denied Exeter a spot in the prize draw as they were beaten by the team that replaced them in the runners up spot Who Ate All Depays.

However, before that game Bailey’s Boys confirmed their status as league champions with a 5-0 win over 2 Goals 1 Cup. The boys celebrated their victory in the only way possible with a pint and a sausage roll. They will look forward to the prize draw in January and hope to claim the £12K holiday to Germany. Good luck lads!

On the other pitch Gangsters were proving a point of their own with an impressive 5-0 win against The Underdogs. The new balls initially seemed to make it difficult for certain players to keep pace with the speed of the game but once they got used to the movement on the ball Gangsters re-established their smart passing game to cut The Underdogs to ribbons. The win ensured a strong finish to the season but the guys are desperate to get back to contending for the title next season.

In the third game of the night Unplayable’s took on FC Guava in an evenly matched game. Unplayable’s went 1-0 up early on while Guava were still finding their feet. However, the longer the game went on the more comfortable Guava were becoming on the ball. They pushed Unplayable’s further and further back until the breakthrough came mid way through the second half. With the game heading towards a draw there was just enough time for Unplayable’s captain Justin to blaze a ball high over the bar into the swamp behind the pitch.

At the same time as this Athletic Bilbao Baggins were doing their best to underline their credentials to have a go at the title next season with a fantastic performance against Bass Rugby. The boys welcomed back captain Martin to their lineup and he presence seemed to give them a lift. Sam Rickets up front was as dynamic as ever and he capped off an excellent season with another brace. He has already expressed his desire to take the MVP prize next season.

The final games of the night were both incredibly close. At the bottom of the table Sloblins secured their 2nd point of the season with a 1-1 draw against The Plough. On the other pitch Exeter Gently only needed a draw to secure the runners up spot in the league. They looked comfortable for much of the game even if they couldn’t quite create the clear opening needed to beat the infallible Jason in goal. With not much happening and the game heading towards a draw Who Ate All Depays got a free kick on the edge of the box. They had spoken before the game about firing free kicks into a crowded area to try nick a deflection and this is exactly what happened. Twice the call deflected before hitting the back of the net. Exeter complained about obstruction on the keeper but there didn’t seem to be much in it. Despite their efforts though Exeter couldn’t find a way back into the game.

After being 1st for such a long time and then second finishing third was a hard pill to sealer for the lads. They will need to re-discover their consistency and threat in front of goal if they are to challenge Baileys next season. With Ryan Baker hopefully returning in the new year that will certainly help, but will it be enough?

The league is now full ahead of the new season, however, if you would like to join the league then you can still get yourself into the waiting list. Spaces are in high demand for the best league Royal Wootton Bassett has to offer.
