It was another excellent night of football on Monday night in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett six a side from Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. Gangsters won again to maintain their advantage at the top of the table. However, after Who Ate All Depays and Athletic slipped up it was Exeter Gently who emerged as Gangsters main rivals at the top of the table. Elsewhere the midfield battle is just as intense with any team capable of beating anyone else on any given night.
In the opening game of the night, this seasons surprise package The Unplayables took on strugglers FC Guava but with a few key players missing for Justin it was always going to be a close game. Nevertheless, it was Unplayables that started the better and filled with confidence they set about passing the ball around to create space. It worked well and soon they were 1-0 up. This seemed to spark Guava into life and they came back at The Unplayables. The Unplayables couldn’t cope with the sustained pressure and by half time they were 3-1 down. They recovered in the second half and managed to get one back but they couldn’t quite create a clear opening at the end that would have allowed them to snatch a point. For Guava it represents their first win of the season and puts them ahead of both The Plough and The Underdogs. For the Unplables it’s another disappointment result that sees them drop back into the midfield pack.
In the nights other early game Athletic Bilbao Baggins and 2 Goals 1 Cup took to the field. Both teams had their strongest 6 out and so the game promised to be full of action as Athletic looked to maintain their strong start to the season while 2 Goals 1 Cup looked to get back to winning ways after a disappointing start to the season. It was a close game with very few chances. Just as the game looked like heading towards a 0-0 draw 2 Goals snatched a winner after a scrappy goal line scramble. The loss was a bitter disappointment to Athletic who had hoped to keep pace with the teams around them. Whereas for 2 Goals the last grasp winner could very well be the moment that kick starts their season.
In the second round of games Gangsters Allardyce continued their impressive start to the season by beating The Underdogs 5-0. The army lads were always comfortable and once they had established a commanding lead they sat back and contended themselves with knocking the football around while allowing The Underdogs to chase shadows. The win ensures that Gangsters stay top and with a healthy goal difference to boot. At the other end The Underdogs now sit bottom. After such a difficult game The Underdogs will hope they can bounce back like have done previously.
In the other game Alexandre LakofKet inherited a 5-0 win after Bailey’s Boys decided to leave the league. Owing to too many injuries. Captain Alex expresses his gratitude for the quality of the league and said his team will definitely return once their injured players are back fit.
In the final games of the night Norfolk ‘N’Chance continued their revival with a solid 3-0 win against The Plough. The result was never really in any serious doubt and as soon as the game got started you could see who the better team was. Norfolk have developed after the difficult start to the season into a strong and well organised team and they used this to stifle any chance the Plough had to get up the pitch. When they got the ball down and passed they were clinical, cutting The Plough apart at the back. The only dot on their copybook was their finishing. They wasted chances and against the sort of opposition that Norfolk wanted to be competing against, that could prove costly.
Two of those teams met in the final match of the night. With Baileys gone, these two teams alongside Gangsters are the ones that will no doubt be fighting for the league trophy come the end of the season. As expected it was a tight game and neither team was giving anything away. For Exeter going up against quite possibly the best keeper in the league it was always going to be a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock. Exeter had been on their own goal line for much of the game. With Depays pushing to find a winner the ball fell to Sam. He took his chance and played a quick ball through to Wallace. Wallace ran the length of the pitch and gave Jason the eyes to slot the ball in the corner. The question then was could they hang on? They had some nervy moments but just about kept Depays at bay to take home the points. The win moves them up just behind Gangsters into second place in the league. For Depays it was a huge disappointment but one they will no doubt recover from.
