It was a goal fest for the winning teams in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side as the winning teams won by large and clear margins. It is clear that the league extension next season will allow teams to play competitive games week in week out.
The night started with a Royal Wootton Bassett derby between local lads 2 Goals 1 Cup and the Underdogs. 2 Goals 1 Cup were the strong favourites going into the game and they did not disappoint with a 6-1 thrashing of their rivals. Raisham was at his brilliant best. He controlled the game magnificently from the middle of the park, picking up the ball and driving towards the oppositions goal line. They are in a mid-table dog fight with 8 points separating 4th down to 9th. A strong finish will be necessary to push for a strong top half finish.
In the other early kick off an entertaining game took place between Athletico and Gangsters. The crucial moment of the game was when a penalty was awarded for a late challenge just inside the box. Chris picked himself up, dusted himself off and dispatched the ball into the back of the net. This made the score 2-0 and gave Gangsters clear breathing space. From this point on they controlled the game and prevented Athletico from creating too many clear cut chances.
In the second round of games The Unplayables and Bailey's Boys were like boys in a candy shop. FC Guava, struggling with some key personal absent were always going to be up against it against the most ruthless team in the league. Bailey's are ruthlessly efficient and there was never any chance that they would go easy on Guava. They put 10 past the men in red with the pick of the goal scorers being Jason. Everything he touched seemed to turn to goals. In the other game captain Justin expected a reaction after last weeks disappointing performance and this is what they received with a dominant win over Sloblins. The euphoria of their performance was still evident 24 hours on. No doubt it was a good night in the Rivers household!!!
The game of the night took place in the final round of kick offs as Who Ate All Depays took on The Plough. The game was end to end with both teams having plenty of chances. However, the difference, as has so often been the case this season for the Depays was once again their Seamen-esk goalkeeper Jason Hillier. He made some simply stunning saves to deny Plough front man Padget in the first half when his team was under pressure
However, in the second half, Depays switched tactics and with this they managed to force the breakthrough after a scrap in the Plough's box. You could visibly see the Plough heads slump after they had given so much. From here on in there was only going to be one winner. Who Ate added two more goals to put themselves in a clear third place.
The final game of the night saw Exeter take on Bass. Bass valiantly did their best to take the game to Exeter but the quality of Exeter meant it was always going to be a difficult game for the lads. Exeter captain Pete Leppan did a brilliant job of distributing the ball from deep but had a challenge on his hands keeping his boys focused on the job at hand, as clearly Ryan Wallace and Jay were having their own personal battle to see who could score the silkiest goal. This came to a head when Wallace pulled off an outrageous back heel in the style of Henry all those years ago. The ball wen through the legs of the goal keeper and was heading towards goal, only for Jay to rush in and steal the goal away from Wallace. The result was never in doubt by this point so perhaps you could forgiver them. Next week however, they will need to be on top of their game as they go up against Bailey's Boys in a game that will no doubt decide the location of the Leisure Leagues trophy for this season.
