With the new season of the Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side a month old the league table is beginning to take shape. What’s clear is that this season the league promises to be closer and more competitive than ever before. There are two clear favourites for the title, while just behind them is a chasing pack eager to take advantage of any slip ups the top two might make.
The night started with one of the favourites for the title Who Ate All Depays taking on FC Guava who so far this season have struggled to get the results that their performances have at times deserved. It was a similar case on Monday. Despite performing well they struggled to turn their good play into clear cut chances. At the interval Depays had a narrow lead but knew they would need to play better in the second half in order to secure the points. When they came out they completely took charge of the situation. They scored another beautifully worked goal that left Guava chasing shadows. After that Depays controlled the football and managed the game beautifully to secure the win. The win keeps up Depays impressive start to the season. They currently sit tied for first place alongside Gangsters Allardyce.
In the other early kick off Norfolk ‘N’Chance looked to once again make up lost ground on the league leaders with a competitive game against 2 Goals 1 Cup. They won the game 2-0 but in some ways this performance was more impressive than the game they had last week when they scored 17. 2 Goals 1 Cup have started the season brightly and are beginning to get back to their best form. However, Norfolk made a fast start and blew away 2 Goals in the opening minutes of the game. They quickly established a 2-0 lead and dominated the first half and had plenty of chances to extend their lead further. While 2 Goals improved in the second half in reality they created very little. Norfolk still have a long way to go to overtake the teams ahead of them but now they have found their stride the teams above them will be looking over their shoulder and dreading the week they have to play the boys in white.
Game 3 unfortunately saw Athletic inherit a 5-0 win as a result of Baileys failure to organise a team for the match. They are struggling with injuries at the moment. Hopefully a week off will allow them to recover and stay in the league for the long term. For Athletic the points have allowed them to move into third place in the league one point behind the top two. They will hope to build on this momentum they are creating to put the pressure on the teams above them.
One of the games of the night saw The Plough take on The Underdogs. Both teams have been inconsistent since joining the league. On week they look like they could beat anybody the next they struggle. So it was no surprise that in many ways these two sides cancelled each other out. The game was backwards and forwards as each team attacked and counter-attacked. The Plough came after a lovely team move across the pitch from right to left and then back again. This opened the space that gave their attacker time and space in the box to pick his spot. The Underdogs came back with a great solo effort. With a minute left on the clock The Underdogs completed the turn around. With the clock ticking down they managed to get the ball into a dangerous position and with the last kick of the game they found the back of the net to snatch the points. The win represents a huge boost to the mentality of the Underdogs after their drubbing the week before and hopefully they can now get their season back on track.
The final games of the night were both hotly contested and full of action. In the first Exeter Gently put Alexandre LacOfKet in their place with an excellent 3-0 win. Both teams attempted to get the ball down and play but it was Exeter that I’m reality controlled the game. They used their superior strength and experience to dominate the football. They played through the lines with confidence and crucially for them did not overplay in the final third. Instead they were clinical with their finishing. Without the ball they were well organised and stifled every attempt Alexandre had to try and get the ball forward leaving new keeper Ben Alder little to do in goal. With this win Exeter stay just one point off the top of the table.
The team they sit just behind has arguable been the most impressive team in the league so far this season. Gangsters Allardyce are the only undefeated team in the league so far this season with three wins and two draws. It was a close game between them and the Unplayable’s who themselves have started the season in superb form. The game was fast paced with both sides moving the ball quickly and showing plenty of energy to get up and down the pitch. Gangsters first goal came after a lovely team move across the pitch from right to left and then back again. This opened the space that gave their attacker time and space in the box to pick his spot. Their second came from a great solo effort when there was only a minute left on the clock and the Unplayable’s were down to 5 following a sin bin for dissent. The win keeps Gangsters at the top but with a highly competitive chasing back right on their tale they will have to keep winning in order to stay there.
