It was a great start to the new season of the Gerard Buxton six a side as we welcomed lots of new teams to the league.
The first new team to get underway was Who Ate All Depays who took on 2 Goals 1 Cup. The age gap might have been large but the gap in class was not. There were times when Who Ate All Depays showed that they would have no trouble fitting into the league as they passed the ball around with confidence. Fitness ultimately played its part as 2 Goals came into the game the longer it went on and eventually they were well worth their 4-1 win with the pick of the goals coming from Raisham Mudhar as he rounded the keeper to slide the ball home.

At the same time Bass Rugby and Sloblins went head to head in a tight game that could have gone either way for a long time. Again fitness rather than outright quality won this game and Bass Rugby have always had the physical edge over their opponents. They managed the game really well and three goals was enough to seal the win. Sloblins will be keen to avoid another wooden spoon trophy and will be pleased by their performance in this one.

Two teams familiar with each other after playing friendlies in the last couple of weeks went up against each other in this game. The Unplayables in their new bright orange kit went up against Athletic Bilbao Baggins. The game was played in the true spirit of Leisure Leagues with great camaraderie between the two sets of lads. For much of the game it was unclear who would come out on top. In the dying moments Sam Ricketts went through on goal for Athletico before he calmly rounded the keeper and spotted home.

On the other pitch new boys FC Guava were taught a lesson by last seasons champions Gangsters Allardyce who got their title defence off to the perfect start with a comfortable win. In truth the lads never really got out of third gear and they will have to find more if they are to beat the top teams in the league. FC Guava will come back stronger having never played together before last nights match.
MOM: Jack Smith
The final games saw Bailey’s Boys give the Underdogs a footballing lesson as they romped to a 15-0 win. The gulf in class was plain to see and it looks as though the Underdogs may well give Sloblins a run for their money to be the best worst team in the league. At the other end of the league table it could be that Bailey’s Boys take over from Silence of the Lahms as Gangsters closest rivals.

The game of the night was between Exeter Gently, returning to the league after a season out and Hardley Athletic. This was a physical battle between two sides marched in terms of ability and commitment. It was a pleasure to watch and both teams deserved to get something out of the game. However, football can be cruel at a momentary lack of concentration from Hardley allowed Ryan Wallace to sneak in and snatch the winner with a clinical finish at the near post.
MOM: Sam Munson
This concludes the first night of the new season and it is already shaping up to be an absolute corker.
