In the captivating and high-stakes world of 6-a-side football, Week 6 of the Shrewsbury Monday League was nothing short of thrilling. Action unfolded on the pitch for both the Premier League and Division 1, with players fighting it out to claim the top spot in their respective divisions.
In the Premier League, an extremely tight match was observed as FC BACK OF THE NETO narrowly triumphed over Barely Athletic with a 1-0 win. The solitary, yet decisive goal came from the boot of Neto captain, George Armstrong, who caught out the Barely defence with a quickly taken free kick. In a game of few clear chances, George's strike ensured the current champions edged the game and gained a vital 2 points. The match saw a return to form for Barely Athletic who were back to their ultra competitive best and on another day could easily have got something from the game.
Division 1 saw a high intensity battle between promotion hopefuls Grand Theft Porto and Passion FC. Despite a valiant effort from Grand Theft Porto, Passion FC emerged victorious with a nail-biting 3-2 triumph. Porto led 2-1 midway through the second half through a well taken double from Gaz. However "The Passionfruits" continued to push for an equaliser and eventually ground down their opponent with 2 quick fire goals. Goalscorers Harrison and 2 from Alex ensured they were victorious and took a vital victory in the race for the top 2.
With promotion rivals Porto and Passion FC playing each other, SVR had an opportunity to close the gap to the top in their match against Halfway Wanderers. In a high quality performance, Alex's side dismantled their opponents in a convincing 5-1 victory. Goals from Jack, Isaac and Alex and a double from the dangerous Eddie Whitehouse-Jones ensured SVR grabbed the 2 points on offer. It was a disappointing result for Halfway following their excellent victory last week. The Wanderers will no doubt reflect on improvements they can make next time around.
As the dust settles on Week 6, it is evident that the competition is really heating up. Tony's Tigers and FC Back Of the Neto remain locked together on 11 points at the top of the Premier League with WBS lurking menacingly 2 points back. In Division 1, Passion FC lead the way by 2 points from Grand Theft Porto with SVR and Shrewbacca closing in behind.
