Play in the Shrewsbury Monday football league powered by Leisure Leagues
The Shrewsbury Monday 6-a-side football league kicked off its new season yesterday with some thrilling matches in both the Premier League and Division 1. Teams battled it out on the pitch, demonstrating the spirit and competitive drive that defines the league.
In the Premier League, FC Back of the Neto and newly promoted Passion FC played out a nail-biting 3-3 draw. Alex McPhail of Passion FC outshone others with his brilliant performance, netting two goals against a tough FC Back of the Neto defense. Oli grabbed Passion's other goal as they raced into a 3 - 1 lead. But Neto showed their mettle to fight back for a point with their 3 goals coming from Charlie, Chris and Harry. Both these sides will be looking to challenge for the title this season and will be pleased to get through their opener undefeated.
In the leagues other match, defending champions Tonys Tigers managed to edge out SVR with a 2-1 victory in a closely contested match. A depleted SVR went ahead though Josh but Tigers fought back with goals from Josh and the impressive Joel to secure a narrow victory. Former champions SVR will hope to get some players back for the weeks to come and showed they can match the league's best on their day. Tigers will look to gather momentum as they look to defend their title.
Over in Division 1, Barely Athletic put on a classy display, defeating FC Shrewbacca in a commanding 4-0 win. The star of the match and the week was Barely Athletic's Jake Holloway. He scored an impressive hatrick putting him in the lead as the top scorer in Division 1. His outstanding performance also secured him the title of the most valued player of the week. Tom was also on the scoresheet as Barely opened with a dominant victory. Shrewbacca, missing a number of players this week, will look to respond with a full strength team next week.
In the evening's friendly matches, Hardly Athletic saw off Halfway Wanderers and WBS with impressive 8-1 and 5-1 victories respectively to demonstrate their intentions for the season.
As the season has just begun, teams are warming up to the competition with each match revealing new strengths and weaknesses. It's clear that the players are ready to tackle the season head-on, with spectators in for a real treat.
