The Shrewsbury Monday Football League kicked off its new season last night, with thrilling matches in both the Premier League and Division 1. Teams put on a series of entertaining matches with each striving to make an impactful start to the league.
In the Premier League Division, FC BACK OF THE NETO claimed an impressive victory over WBS FC with a 4-1 win. Man of the match George rifled in 2 goals for Neto with Sam and Chris completing the scoring. Eddie scored a consolation for WBS who couldn't quite match their opponents on the night.
Premier League new boys Hardly Athletic narrowly edged out champions Tony's Tigers by 3 goals to 2 in a fiercely competitive match. Well taken strikes from Oscar, Tom and Ewan were just enough to defeat Tigers who netted through Alban and Olli. It was a fantastic end to end match which could have gone either way but Hardly took the spoils in on this occasion to give themselves the perfect start.
Newly promoted TK Maxx Club De Futbol and Passion FC proved to be evenly matched, ending the game with a 2-2 draw. Notably, Alex McPhail of Passion FC emerged as man of the match as he grabbed 2 goals in a terrific all round performance. The equally impressive Robbie and Sam scored for TK Maxx who showed they can more than hold their own in the Premier Division. Both sides take a point in a solid start to the new season.
Meanwhile, in Division 1, Barely Athletic managed a 1-0 victory over Saloppy Seconds. A slalom run and finish from the jet heeled Nathaniel was enough to grab the pints in what was av very even game. Saloppy Seconds will be disappointed not to take anything from the match after competing well throughout.
In another exciting match, FC Shrewbacca triumphed over new side KFC with a convincing 6-2 win. The returning Cameron showcased his skills, grabbing a fantastic hatrick and was a constant threat throughout with Dan and a double from Sam completing the scoring. KFC scored their goals through Darren and Jay and will now look to find their feet quickly in their new division.
Other new side Manj Dog also started the season on a high note, securing a 3-0 victory against the Halfway Wanderers. A double from the lethal Charlie and a further strike from Jacob were enough to secure a comfortable victory with Halfway starting the season a little sluggishly.
This exciting start to the season sets the stage for thrilling matches ahead. As the season progresses, the competition is set to intensify, and football enthusiasts can look forward to more thrilling clashes in the coming weeks.
