Play in the Shrewsbury Monday football league powered by Leisure Leagues
In the latest round of the Shrewsbury Monday football league, teams across the Premier League and Division 1 divisions battled it out in what was a pivotal, action-packed ninth week of the season.
In the Premier League division, Six Offenders were defeated by FC BACK OF THE NETO in the first match of a title-deciding, winner takes all double header. Neto put in an exceptional performance to win 4-1 with a flurry of second half goals securing them an emphatic victory. A hatrick from top scorer Sam and another from Harry was enough to secure the 2 points with Jesse replying for Offenders. In an end-to-end battle, both sides had numerous chances to score with Neto edging 1-0 ahead at half time. The next goal was vital as Offenders rallied to get back into the game but 2 quick-fire goals extinguished their hopes. The result took Neto a point clear at the top but Offenders will no doubt want to respond in the return fixture next week as victory will ensure they retain their league crown.
In another drama-filled match up, this time at the other end of the table, WBS FC edged past SVR with a precious 2-1 victory. In a tight affair, it looked like the spoils would be shared with goals from Eddie of SVR and James of WBS leaving the score at 1 apiece. This result would have relegated WBS however, divine intervention struck as SVR scored an own goal with the last kick of the game to hand WBS the victory. The 2 sides will now go again and battle it out for survival in next week's final match.
In the evening's friendly match, Barely Athletic played out an entertaining 5-4 defeat to FC Back of The Neto. With defenses non-existent, the goals flowed in a dramatic back and forth encounter played in great spirits between the 2 sides. Barley keeper Jake even scored from a goal kick for his first goal in 12 years. Congratulations Jake!
Moving on to Division 1, FC Shrewbacca demonstrated their prowess on the field with another resounding 5-1 victory over much improved Halfway Wanderers. A Hatrick from inspirational captain Stephen and a double from Luke cancelled out a sublime early strike from Halfway's Leon. The result leaves Shrewbacca needing to avoid defeat next week to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Tony's Tigers roared towards promotion with a thumping 7-0 victory over The Other Team. 4 goals from league top scorer Joel along with goals from Charlie, Olly and Lewis ensured the Tigers pounced upon the 2 points on offer. The Other Team, missing a number of key players, battled hard but could not match their rampant opponents despite some terrific saves from man-of-the-match Don "The Don" in goal.
In the evening's final match, Passion FC took on Ternhill Rangers with the latter knowing a victory was essential to keep up their promotion charge. In a hard fought affair, The Passionfruits stifled their opponents with their relentless pressing game to secure a 2-0 victory, their 2nd on the bounce. Goals from Cainen and captain Richie in a terrific move secured an unexpected win for their side. Ternhill played well in spells but their final pass let them down as they failed to score for the first time this season. The result was a huge blow to their hopes of promotion and they go into next week hoping for a Shrewbacca loss.
