It was as you were last night in the Leisure Leagues Swindon Thursday six a side from Swindon Academy. The top two won once again to extend their lead over the rest of the league. The Plough won to cement their position as best of the rest, while at the bottom of the league BA Boys beat Spezial to join them and Lean Team on five points in what is shaping up to be a fascinating battle at the bottom of the table.
The night started with one of the two title favourites Fat and Sassy going up against 1980s Legends. The game represented a potential banana skin for Adam and his team so it was important that they came out, performed and secured the win. The game started badly for them as well when 1980s Legends, keen to make a fast start, had a string of chances to test Fat and Sassy’s goal keeper. Fortunately he was up for the challenge and as the half progressed Fat and Sassy started to dominate the ball. They scored either side of the interval to put themselves 2-0 up and comfortably in charge of the match. For the final quarter they were content to keep the ball and manage the game towards its conclusion.
In game two the other title contender The Lads went about their game in the same vain that they have all season - with relentless energy and enthusiasm to score as many goals as humanly possible. The victim this week was Lean Team. They didn’t manage to quite make it into double figures but 9-0 was still a pretty good return for the team who are hoping to dethrone Fat and Sassy. The best thing about The Lads is that they don’t rely on one player to score their goals. They have players all
over the pitch that are capable of bagging the goals which means of one has an off night another can step up and fill the void. They are also scorers of great goals. They cut apart the opposition like a hot knife carving through butter. The countdown is now on for the showdown game with Fat and Sassy in what appears to be the only thing that can stop them from achieving the perfect season.
Game 3 saw best of the rest The Plough take on everyone’s favourite team Exeter Gently. After a disappointing result last week The Plough were back with a bang last night and secured a convincing victory. Despite lacking star man Padge the boys in blue created a hatful of chances. Vice captain AJ said after the game that he thought the score line flattered Exeter. AJ opened the scoring hammering home from just outside the box. He then made it two soon after a lovely pass from Dan Uzz. AJ then became provider with a beautifully crafted through ball. As the half drew to a close AJ skipped down the wing leaving defenders in his wake before drilling a low hard cross to the back post where Sam popped up with a goal. Exeter in a rare attack struck back just before the interval to set up an intriguing second half. In the first 10 minutes of the second half many chances were created, but Josh and Ash up front were unable to convert any of these chances. AJ then stepped up and scored his third of the night and Plough’s fifth before Bestie added a fifth to make the final score 6-1 to the Plough.
The late kick off was full of action. Ba Boys have had a tough time in recent weeks against the leagues top two teams so it was good to see them get back to winning ways as they beat Spezial 4-1. Both teams attempted to get the ball down and play but it was Ba Boys that in reality controlled the game. They had more energy to get up and down the pitch and combined this with some great link up play to dominate possession. They played through the lines with confidence and crucially for them did not overplay in the final third. Instead they were clinical with their finishing. Without the ball they were well organised and stifled every attempt SPEZIAL had.
