It was another excellent night of football on Thursday in the Leisure Leagues Swindon six a side from Swindon Academy. All teams attended and across the four matches there was excellent football played by everyone. In terms of the title race there was a major upset as the previously untouchable Lads were held by The Plough to set up an enthralling end to the season between them and Fat and Sassy.
In the opening game of the night, Fat and Sassy took on Exeter Gently. The game was much closer than many were expecting. Even though Fat and Sassy were missing several key players they still expected to comfortably see off Exeter. However, it took the boys in orange a long time to break Exeter down. They didn’t get the first goal until late in the first half after a mix up at the back by Exeter. In the second half Fat and Sassy then started to play the sort of football we have become accustomed to from them. Soon after they added a second following an excellent team move. The result means they are now back level with The Lads at the top of the table while Exeter stay bottom.
In game 2 1980s Legends got back to winning ways by beating Ba Boys 2-0. Ba Boys have played well this season without always getting the results that they deserve. Nevertheless, they went into this game confident of causing an upset. However, these hopes were soon dashed when 1980s took an early lead. They continued to impress and added another to double their lead by half time. In the second half Legends took their foot of the gas a little which allowed Ba Boys back into the game. However, they couldn’t turn there good play into genuine chances and so the game ended up with 1980s Legends as the deserved winners. Both teams are comfortably mid table and playing for pride between now and the end of the season.
In game 3 The Plough put a huge dent in The Lads title chances by holding them to a 1-1 draw. AJ, Vice Captain of The Plough, put the result down to a mix of a effort, a great game plan and difficult conditions. They set up in a much more defensive lineup and looked to hit The Lads on the counter. This worked wonders for The Plough, and although icy conditions hindered The Lads free flowing football The Plough did their bit to stifle The Lads when they got to close to goal. Despite having most of the ball it was Padge who struck first with a good finish to put The Plough 1-0 up at half time. The Lads continued to dominated in the second half and did pull level through a slip from captain Josh in what was really their only chance of the game. After The Lads continued to have most of the ball and created some good chances. However, Michael in goal made a few great stops, whilst Sam and AJ put some crucial blocks in at vital times. The Plough continued to looked dangerous on the counter with The Lads pushing men forward but the keeper made several good blocks. In the end a draw was probably a fair result. It shows that the Lads are , leading to an interesting climax to the season.
In the nights final game a new look Spezial took on Lean Team. Once again it was another fine footballing contest as both teams looked to get the ball down and play. However, it was Lean Team who looked like the better outfit and it was pleasing to see them convert their chances as this has been something that they struggled with in the first part of the season. The final score was 4-1 with goals coming from Kurt X2, captain Ryan Prosser and Brad. The win sees Lean Team climb to an impressive 5th in the league which, after the start to the season that they had, is no mean feat!
