Lads secure 2nd place in last game of Swindon six a side.
On the final night of the season in the Leisure Leagues Swindon Thursday six a side there was a carnival atmosphere. As the Whippies drank in their success The Lads and Kurdistan were battling for the runners up spot in a highly charged but excellent game of football that the Lads would come out on top of. For the rest of the league it was an opportunity to blood new talent and prepare for the new season which will start at Swindon Academy next week.
The first game saw 1980s Legends take on the Plough in a game that was a lot closer than what the final score line suggested. 1980s hit the post on at least two occasions and even though they were restricted to efforts from range they would be justified in being a little disappointed not to at least get on the score sheet. After the game vice captain AJ was full of praise for the defensive partnership of a Ash and Jonny. He has credited them with the Plough’s upturn in form in the second half of the season as they have given the front two the confidence to push forward and get the goals.
In game 2, new team SPEZIAL FC showed that they will be a team capable of performing well in the league with a solid victory against a much depleted Lean Team. Spezial look like a team that is well organised and well drilled team. Each person knew their job and executed the game plan perfectly. They got the ball forward quickly where they striker was able to hold up the ball superbly well before bringing the midfielders into play. The goals came from all angles and showed a great array of finishing ability among the squad which will also bode well moving forward.
The third game of the night saw league champions Whippies take on Exeter Gently. Exeter had good chances to spring a surprise but unfortunately they could not get the ball over the line. Jay, Owen and Ryan all saw good chances either drift wide or go safely into the big hands of Josh Harmer. At the other end Whippies only had two opportunities and they took them both. The result did not impact the league positions. Exeter still ended up with the wooden spoon and the Whippies were already confirmed champions. Both will go into the December prize draw with the Whippies hoping for the £12K holiday to Germany.
The final game of the night had a lot riding on it. With just a point separating the two sides Kurdistan simply had to draw the game to finish as the runners up in the league. The Lads had to win to go above them. Quite simply the Lads blitzed them. From the first minute they were on top and they sustained this pressure throughout the entire game. As the game began to slip out of reach for Kurdistan they began to lose their heads, resorting to fouling the Lads in order to try dent their momentum. There was none of the slick passing football that is so often a feature of their game when they are on top form. The game was over as a contest by half time with the Lads already 3-0 up. They managed to add another late on as Matt Crawford completed an impressive hat-trick. The win ensures they go into the prize draw alongside the others.
