The rain and freezing cold temperatures did little to dampen the mood on Thursday as the brand new Leisure Leagues Swindon six a side from Swindon Academy got underway with a full compliment of 8 teams in attendance.
The Lads kicked off the night up against 1980s legends. The Lads are determined this season to give last seasons champions a run for their money and so wanted to get off to a fast start and they did just that. They were 4-0 by half time and in cruise control in the second half. They added one more to take the final result to 5-0 but it could have been more of Legends goal keeper had not pulled off a string of world class saves.
In the second game new boys Ba Boys got a shock to the system when they faced off against Fat and Sassy. It’s typical that when a new team joins the league that they go up against the strongest team and they struggled to match the competitiveness of Fat and Sassy. They were out competed in every department but did still show enough about them to make people think that once they get comfortable they will be more than able to compete in the league.
The third game representedboth of these teams an opportunity to start a fresh after disappointing seasons. However, it was the Plough who took advantage. Lean Team made far too many errors and seemed devoid of ideas as The Plough systematically pulled them apart. The attacking three of Ash, Paget and AJ were devastating together. AJ’s first goal was an early contender for goal of the season as it fired into the top corner. Paget, keen to prevent AJ taking all the glory showed up with his own clever flicks to set Ash away to double the lead moments later. By the end of the game it was a devastating 7-0 win the boys in blue.
In the final game of the night, Exeter Gently, keen to avoid another season as the recipients of the wooden spoon went up against SPEZIAL. The game was end to end and both teams had chances they felt they should have done better with. The break through didn’t come until late in the first half after some clever build up play down SPEZIAL’s left flank. With Exeter forced to push up more in the second half there was more space for SPEZIAL’s front line to exploit and exploit it they did. They added two more goals in the space of a few minutes to see the game off. Exeter to their credit didn’t stop until the end of the game but it looks like it could be another long season for Josh and his boys.
