Heard the one about the football team that was banned from a league for being too good?
No, this isn’t a joke, it really happened to a squad this week – and now the World’s largest provider of 6 a side football – who have proudly had Ronaldinho wearing our colours – have stepped in to give support to all teams in the same situation.
The Three Crowns, formed of players who used to play at a semi-professional level, took part in their first match in the Goals league 20 years ago and have won a staggering 57 titles from a possible 60.
Now they’ve been informed by Goals that they are no longer welcome. A move Leisure Leagues have described as “ridiculous.”
New Business Executive Jack Bullivant said there are many teams who play in our leagues who have won it multiple times. “We love the fact that we’ve got teams in there for a decade or more. We now see dads coming down with sons that were only little when the league kicked off, it’s brilliant that we bring people together like this.”
Jack confirmed that the firm had already offered a place to the vanquished team in one of their leagues in the South West, but he also had this challenge for any team that found themselves in a similar situation to the Goals side: “We are not scared of excellence! We pride ourselves on bring the best and if that attracts the best teams too, then that’s great.”
Jack added that the Leisure Leagues was proud to cater for all standards of football, explaining: “It is absolutely vital to us that everyone in the community feels welcome here. From the good players to those who were never quite good enough to get in the school team – they are all entitled to the same opportunity.”
Leisure Leagues is also involved with the 6 a side Champions league, which takes place each year – this year the tournament is getting underway in Slovenia in mid-October and Jack said: “This is the perfect way for teams to really test themselves. Some of the best teams in the world will be there and it promises to be a wonderful few days.”
