One of our match officials in South Wales has just swapped 6 a side for 4×4 – and raised an incredible amount of money to help diabetes charities.
Will Morris (below in the grey), who referees in the Bridgend Leagues and two of his friends decided to attempt the David Goggins 4x4x48 Navy Seal Challenge.
The idea is to run four miles every four hours for 48 hours – which as Will tells us, is harder than it sounds.
“At first glimpse, for the average runner it seems relatively easy as four miles is comparatively a short distance,” he explained. “However, over the 48 hours 48 miles will have to be done which is almost 2 marathons in 2 days, no mean feat!”
Will and his two fellow warriors, Harrison Evans and Mark Teesdale had decided to do the challenge after Mark’s family suffered some tough news last autumn: “His brother was recently diagnosed with Type 1 after a very horrible month last September.”
So the three set to work: “We decided to give this challenge a go in order to raise money for JDRF, The UK’s leading research charity for Type 1 diabetes. In their 30 years of research they have helped make huge technological and medicinal advances in treating, preventing and hopefully one day curing Type 1 diabetes.”
The trio completed it and raised over £1600, but it isn’t something that Will is planning to do in the near future, as he smiles: “The challenge was far more physically and mentally taxing than I thought it would be. Especially the 4am run after very little sleep, I won’t be rushing anytime soon to run another 4 miles!”
