In recent years, charity football has grown into a massive phenomenon, uniting teams across networks to play for a noble cause. Among them is the official Leisure Leagues charity team, going above and beyond to make a difference. Over the last 12 months, this team has raised thousands for charity, with recent efforts raising hundreds of pounds for Muscular Dystrophy. Today, we sit down with their skipper, Chay Clarkson, to learn more about their inspiring journey.
The Beginning: A Hobby Turns into Something More
Chay’s football journey began as a casual hobby, playing 7-a-side games with friends at Len Forge under Leisure Leagues in early 2019. Little did he know that this seemingly innocent pastime would lead to something far more significant. he recalls, “After some time, I discovered that our team was actually a charity side. The money we paid to play not only covered the field costs but also went towards supporting various charities, which filled me with immense pride.”
Despite not being a competitive player himself, the skipper found the charity aspect of their games deeply gripping. Winning a few leagues was rewarding, but the true fulfillment came from the money raised for worthy causes. Eager to contribute even more, Chay decided to step up his involvement.
Building a Positive Impact through Social Media
In June 2021, the team expanded into 11-a-side football occasionally. Chay recognised an opportunity to further support their cause by running the team’s social media, especially on Twitter. Through his efforts, they gained a devoted following, turning the team into a genuine force for good.
However, creative differences arose, leading to an amicable separation from the original side. He holds nothing but positive feelings towards their former comrades, knowing that the foundation they built continues to flourish.
A New Beginning: The Birth of an Official Charity Side
Undeterred by the changes, Chay and his team seized the opportunity to start their own official charity side. With support from Leisure Leagues, they rebranded in July 2022, adopting the LL branding in both color and conduct. “We took the time to find the right people to join us and start on the right foot,” he explains. The result was a family of dedicated volunteers and like-minded individuals who shared a common goal – playing football for a cause.
Raising Funds with Purpose
The Leisure Leagues charity side follows a strategic approach to maximise their fundraising efforts. They carefully plan their games to raise as much as possible for each charity on a game-by-game basis. “We understand our players have financial commitments too, so we don’t commit to too many games too soon,” he adds. By holding one game per month, they ensure affordability while consistently hitting their fundraising targets.
The Power of Inclusivity and Unity
For Chay and his team, charity football isn’t just about the money raised; it’s about the sense of unity and empowerment they experience. “Everyone’s voice is heard within the team,” he emphasises. From choosing game dates to deciding which charities to support, every individual’s input matters. They value inclusivity and aim to involve regular players wherever possible.
The Future of Charity Football
As charity football continues to gain momentum, They all look forward to seeing more teams joining the cause. Each group brings fresh ideas and unique perspectives, creating a collective force for positive change.
The Leisure Leagues charity side stands as a shining example of how the love of football can make a meaningful impact. Through unity, inclusivity, and passion, they prove that charity football is more than just a game – it’s a powerful platform for spreading goodwill and support.
