DEBRECEN UNDERLINES HUNGARY'S AMBITION

It is no exaggeration to say that Debrecen, also nicknamed Calvinist Rome, is the real sports centre of Hungary. Over the past two decades, it has hosted a number of world and European championships for all ages. People who live there are passionate about all forms of sport.  6-a-side football is not an exception to this, which has a tradition in the region dating back to the 1970s. Hungary established its local association in 2020, which boasts serious achievements in the recent period, even in the face of a global pandemic. In June 2021, the first Leisure Leagues were also launched with the participation of eight teams on Józsa Grund.

With approximately 248,000 inhabitants, Debrecen is the second biggest city in Hungary, after Budapest. Debrecen is the regional centre of the Northern great plain region and capital of Hajdú-Bihar  county. Debrecen is always worth a trip. A large number of the main attractions and sights are to be found at the northerly end of the Piac utca (Piac street), inter alia the neo classical protestant Great Reformed Church. Further leading tourist attractions are located within the Nagyerdei Park. The Great Forest is some tram stops away from the centre, where health spas and Mediterranean adventure spas can be found next to the zoo, sport fields lakeside promenades, all waiting visitors and those longing to rest. Debrecen is packed chock-full with boisterous festivals of cultural and gastronomic interest.

Móré Bengedúz, the president of the association in Hajdú-Bihar County, sees a great future in the Leisure Leagues, which can be found in the centre of the Eastern Hungarian region in Debrecen:

“It is an honour for any city to be able to organize a sub-event of an international organization that has already been proven in several countries around the world. Leisure Leagues is an excellent sporting event for our city, which gives us the opportunity to strengthen Debrecen in the bloodstream of international sports life. In recent years, the most significant developments for sports purposes have taken place in Debrecen, Hungary, which also shows our city’s commitment to sports. Sports lovers have already noticed Debrecen, which has recently won the title of “capital of sports”. In Debrecen, almost every sport can find a home, including 6-a-side football, which awaits sports enthusiasts with our special, unique atmosphere and sports facilities that meet today’s expectations.

The past period has not gone smoothly in Hungary either, but 6 s a side has proven to have huge potential in the region despite the difficulties. This is also shown by the fact that during the pandemic, the organization was able to build a mass base, which on July 22 was also able to launch the first Leisure Leagues championship in the city. With eight teams and nearly a hundred amateur players the ball set off on Józsa Grund. The first round have already proved the popularity of the 6-a-side football, as the excellent matches were watched by plenty of fans on the spot. Next month, our three more championships will start and three one-day tournaments will complete the competition calendar. In Hajdúszoboszló, a city championship will start, while in Debrecen-Pallag, the champions’ league qualifying league will start. In addition, we are organizing a hybrid football championship at the University Sports Center of Debrecen, in which e-sports and regular 6-a-side football are mixed. Here, the teams play the first half 3 to 3, and the second half on console, FIFA. Our goal is to open up new dimensions for 6-a-side football fans through ISF and Leisure Leagues. We want to become market leaders who serve the teams that come to us both professionally and with great care for the community.
