Leisure Leagues’ 6 a side competitions on the Isle Of Wight have been a part of island life for years, but now they are doing their bit to ensure the next generation of footballers is well looked after.
The Ryde based under 7s Oakfield Hawks side play and train at Ryde Academy – the site of a Leisure Leagues competition which houses upwards of 200 players every Thursday evening – and when it became clear that the team needed a new kit, the community minded organisers stepped in.
Area Manager Richard Scott explained the move adding: “We wanted to help ensure the next generation of young players are given the best opportunity to thrive and knowing what a great job the team at Oakfield Youth do in producing and managing their teams it seemed a good fit to help them with some kit”.
The new kits have brought plenty of luck to the Hawks and their season is flying. At the time of writing, the side are unbeaten after 11 games, with one of their players smashing in 25 goals in that time.
Any adult who wants to resume their football journey will have plenty of choice, Leisure Leagues have leagues running four nights a week at Cowes Enterprise College, Queensgate, Sandown Bay and Ryde Academy.
Single players are welcome as teams. It is part of the Leisure Leagues ethos that football should be open to everyone regardless of ability, or indeed whether have a team to play with or not.
The Leisure Leagues Franchise Scheme has been running for well over a decade and now there are over 150,000 players playing in leagues operated by license holders in the UK.
