They often say a football season is a marathon, not a sprint, but one of our players is taking that literally with not one, but two endurance tests this spring – but its all in aid of a good cause.
Sean Woodman, who plays in our Monday league in Bridgend, is planning to do the London Marathon and it’s Chicago counterpart in to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
The cause is close to Sean’s heart as he explained: “Anthony Nolan are the Blood Cancer Charity and Bone Marrow Register and I support them regularly as my uncle died from Leukaemia when I was seven.”
In 2023 he has planned something special: “This year I am taking on both the London and Chicago Marathons for Anthony Nolan Trust. I need to raise £2K as I took a charity place for London,” said Sean.
To help with the fund-raising efforts, Sean, who plays for Tondu Vets, in division one of our league in Bridgend at the town’s college Pencoed Campus, has decided to do a prize draw, with a series of superb prizes.
First Prize is the Ronald Koeman signed and framed Netherlands ’88 shirt. Other prizes are a Mystery German Kit Box, 99/00 Rangers Shirt, and now, thanks to Leisure Leagues stalwart Barry John – who has run our leagues in Bridgend for years and doubles up as the Welsh national 6 a side football team – there is another super award added.
Last night Barry presented Sean with his prized Paul Merson signed ball, (pictured) which he’s had he met the former England international and Sky Pundit a few years ago. Barry was keen to help, adding: “He’s s great lad ‘Woody’ and I wish him well.”
It is all -important to Sean who told us: “I’ve raised £305 so far and hoping that the draw can bring in at least £500.”
