What a start to the new league in Guernsey with goals flying in from everywhere as the new Sunday competition kicked off.
Amigos showed their bond – and skill – as they raced into an early lead by beating Yickalyssafc 11-1 to set the early pace.
Touch Of Simmo had a real touch of class about themselves too, as they saw off FC Basel III by a 6-2 margin.
The day’s other winners were made to work a lot harder, as Shoey FC squeaked past Hangover 96, who may well have been still recovering from Saturday night, by the game’s only goal.
Elsewhere there was a see-saw battle as The Foreigners AFC and J.E.R Group shared four goals – and the points.
Next week sees J.E.R next in line to try and tame The Amigos in what is perhaps the pick of the games, but as Greg Allen, Leisure Leagues Area Manager said, it was just great to be back on the field. “Absolutely,” he confirmed. “It was fantastic to be able to start this league, and is a testimony to the appetite for football that we have always seen on the Island since we brought the community leagues here in the last decade.”
Indeed, this Sunday competition is acting as an overflow for teams that originally entered the Wednesday league, but couldn’t be housed due to the incredible take up of teams who were clamouring to get back after lockdown.
Greg admitted he was delighted with the amount of teams that were playing: “It’s gone marvellously,” he said. “Guernsey was the first league we were able to start in the post-Covid 19 age, and the desire for fitness and community as been brilliant to see.”
