As the talk of Manchester City’s pursuit of the quadruple in the 2022/23 season continues, Leisure Leagues 5 a side team West Herts United has shown that they are nearly matching the feats of the top-flight giants.
The team’s exceptional performance in the recently concluded season saw them claim an astonishing 13 wins out of their 14 matches in the Cheshunt Wednesday League, securing a third league title in consecutive years. This remarkable achievement has firmly established West Herts United as a force to be reckoned with in the local football scene.
“We originally played in the Monday league at the same venue, and we won that,” revealed skipper Luke Haldin. “Then they started the Wednesday league, and that day suited us better, so we swapped over and have won that twice, making it a total of three titles.”
When asked about the team’s secrets to success, Haldin pointed to the team’s well-balanced composition. “We have been extremely lucky to have a very well-balanced team over the past year, but in terms of secrets, I think it all comes down to communication and hard work on the pitch,” Haldin explained. “You will struggle to find a team that’s louder than we are.”
Luke Haldin, who also serves as the team’s goalkeeper, proudly reflected on his standout season personally. “I know I’m always going to be a bit biased, but I think I had a great season,” he proclaimed. “I believe I am the best 5-a-side keeper in Hertfordshire, and that’s a testament to the hard work and dedication I put into my craft.”
Despite their achievements, some members of West Herts United also participate in 11-a-side football. Haldin shared, “I play and run a Saturday team as well (Greenbury United F.C), but only about 50% of our players play Saturdays. As the oldest team in the 5-a-side league, with a combined age of 28, a lot of our players have other commitments.”
Undeterred by their already impressive accomplishments, West Herts United remains determined to continue their winning ways throughout 2023 and into 2024. With their strong team spirit, effective communication, and dedication, they aim to maintain their stranglehold on the Leisure Leagues 5-a-side league and further solidify their status as one of the most successful teams in the region.
“We’re determined to keep winning leagues throughout 2023 and hopefully into 2024,” Haldin emphasised, highlighting the team’s unwavering commitment to success..
As the world focuses on the high-stakes pursuit of silverware in professional football, the accomplishments of West Herts United serve as a testament to the passion and skill exhibited at the community level.
